August is Black Business Month: A Picnic Brunch Kickoff And How You Can Join In The Celebrations

Cheers to Black Business Month

Hello August - Still Black!

Tag a Black-Owned Business was the most common caption of the last few weeks. We were tagging and liking and commenting and adding Black Businesses to our online directory, all the while basking in this energy. You too were likely tagging the businesses you know of and getting introduced to ones you had never heard, talk about major exposure for these amazing businesses!

But after all that exciting social media energy, then what? How do we bring that energy to the next level, actually put our money where our mouth is in a more tangible way and move this from a moment to a movement? This got us thinking....

Firstly, support Black Business through spend, and then, get everyone involved.

The talking got to walking when our money and creativity came out to play. We love being social (safely) so threw a Picnic Brunch with the help of the original Afro Social Centric team while supporting Black-Owned Businesses - what better way to lead into Black Business Month!

We have some ideas on how you can do the same and join us bring this energy all month long by getting on the #BlackBusinessChallenge

The Challenge

We are inviting you to the #BlackBusinessChallenge bingo-style, all you have to do is download the bingo sheet and every time you complete one of the squares, cross it off! You have all month to play along and can share the sheet with everyone to join in. To keep the momentum going, share your sheet in your IG stories every time you complete a square with the hashtag #BlackBusinessChallenge and, of course, tag us…and the business you chose for that day.

Can you imagine the collective econimic impact a month-long movement to support Black Businesses can have?

The Kick-off

To kick-off the #BlackBusinessChallenge and cross off a few items off our own bingo sheet, the OGs of Afro Social Centric got together to toast to some of our favourite Black Businesses:

Shared A Black Owned Business With A Friend

& Listened To A Mix By a Black DJ - check

Vibrant colours in African Prints, African baskets, Traditional North African Tea Sets, Ethiopian Coffee Sets and Comfy Pillows were a big feature of the setup by #LakeshoreLadies.

Every one knows every task goes by faster when you have the right DJ Mix and Lovebonez was on blast with the right soundtrack for set-up.

Throwing your own picnic should definitely be in your summer plans. There are many curated experiences offered by Black-Owned Businesses like The Summer Picnic Experience by Style X Events or 2020 Experience Luxury Picnics by Elite Experience Inc

Eat From Black-Owned Business - check

Le Petit Dejeuner located on King East is not only reasonably priced but the owners went out of their way to ensure our food was packed for a picnic-style and ready right on time for pick-up.

Bought A Product From A Black-Owned Business - check

When we sent out the invitation asking all the ladies to rock something they purchased from a Black-Owned Business they did not disappoint. From hair to nails, clothing to styling, accessories and sunscreen.

Here are the details of who the ladies supported.
